Torano Nuovo is a communal capital in the Province of Teramo. It is located in Italy’s Abruzzo Region. Torano Nuovo sits at an evelvation of and in 2007 had a population of about 1700 inhabitants.
The town is known as a center for the production of two DOC wines, Moltepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. An excellent Cerasuolo can also be found.
One local well known prize winning vintner is Azienda BioVitivinicola Pepe. It is currently managed by the founder’s daughter, Stefania Pepe, along with other family members and dedicated professionals.
Torano Nuovo hosts several local guest houses and agriturismos, Villa Fiore being one such example. Nearby in Valle San Giovanni is a vacation rental house by the name of Casale.
Each year in mid August the town holds the Sagra del Vino, a large festival dedicated to wine, sausage, maccheroni, and (fried) pecorino cheese. People come from miles around to taste delicacies at this popular event. The 2008 was the 39 anniversary celebration. The exceptional quality of wine from this area inspired one local journalist to declare Torano Nuovo “La capitale del Montepulciano d’Abruzzo” (the montpulciano wine capital of Abruzzo).
Torano Nuovo is very famous for the proactive measures the mayor, Dino Pepe, has taken to make the town as environmentally friendly as possible. Torano Nuovo is one of the few towns in the Province of Teramo that has door-to-door refuge pickup. The local residents are very pleased with this development and have recently addded several embellishments including do0r-to-door recycling of used cooking oil. Needless to say, Dino Pepe, is a very popular individual in this area. The nearby town of Campli is studying this arrangement and will likely introduce a similar service in the coming years.
Torano Nuovo has a sister city, Cacabelos, located in Spain.
